Having the perfect body weight is an important for health and in terms of appearance. The maintained body weight not only looks good physically but it also reduces the risk of heart diseases, strokes, diabetes, and high blood pressure. In addition, it also reduces the risk of many different cancer-related diseases. Weight can be gained or loss intentionally while sometimes it happens unintentionally. However, it’s easier to gain weight than losing; while gaining the weight is referred as general negligence. In the contrary, it’s one of the challenge and tough to maintain good body figure along with the perfect weight.

Our body weight is determined by the amount of energy that we take in as food and the amount of energy we use in the action of our day. Energy measured in calories. Metabolism is the combination of all chemical processes within the body that sustain life. Our basal metabolic rate is the number of calories we need for our body to carry out necessary works. If our weight remains constant, this is a sign that we are taking in the same amount of calories that we burn daily. If we are slowly gaining weight over time, it is that our caloric intake is greater than the calories we burn through our daily actions.

Weight loss is a decrease in a body weight. Weight loss can be intentional, such as from exercise, dieting and yoga or unintentional can be lead to illness. It can result from a decrease in a body fluid, muscle mass or fat. A decrease in body fluid can come from medications, fluid loss, lack of fluid intake, or illness such as diabetes. Most people gain and lose weight during any year. Weight loss is normal after pregnancy. Weight loss is often a matter of choice- we choose to cure our diet and exercise habits to become healthy. If there is a healthy and clear reason, then weight loss is normal. However, it is also usual to lose weight if we have serious diseases. For more serious disease, there will usually be one or more other symptoms that grow before any weight loss. Weight loss in these situations can be expected or explained.

Causes of weight loss

Cancer: In the vast cases of cancer, other symptoms will develop before any weight loss. Depending on the type and stage of cancer, there are various symptoms that can occur. However, people notice weight loss as a first symptom. The loss of weight is partly due to increased activity of cancer cells in the body that require nutrition.

Diabetes: 0Type2 diabetes occurs mostly in people aged over 40 though it can occur at younger ages. The common symptoms are being thirsty a lot of the time, passing large amounts of urine, tiredness and weight loss. Some people pass the first three symptoms to do with other things or getting older. So, we must report doctor if in any case of weight loss. The sugar passing out with the urine is partly the cause of weight loss.

Depression: Some people do not recognize that they are depressed. They may feel low, exhausted and not right, but doesn’t know the reason and can’t say why. They may think of it as normal for them. Most people with depression cannot show their true feelings from friends and family. Weight loss may develop due to not eating enough.

Alcohol Abuse: People who drink a lot of alcohol do not look after themselves very well. Their diet obviously not be very good and may lose weight.

Hyperthyroidism: It means that make too much of a hormone called thyroxine. The extra thyroxine causes of our body’s function to speed up. There are lots of possible symptoms include:

  • Tiredness
  • Nervous and anxious
  • More emotional
  • Irritable
  • Sleeping poorly
  • Having Sensation of a thumping heart
  • Shaking
  • Sweating more
  • Loose/frequent stools (diarrhea).

Losing weight despite an increased appetite is another symptom. In the early stage of hyperthyroidism, some people actually feel good and full of energy and don’t even realize they have a problem but lose weight.

Persistent infection or inflammation: It would be usual to have other symptoms with a chronic infection. Mostly, the first symptom that is noticed with infections such as HIV or tuberculosis is weight loss. Hookworm infection is another example where weight loss may be the first indication of disease. There are various conditions that cause persistent inflammation of a part of the body. An inflammatory condition such as Polymyalgia rheumatic may just make you feel unwell and lose weight prior to other symptoms developing.

Eating disorders: In the condition such as anorexia, a person knows they are controlling their diet and exercise and are actively trying to lose weight. However, people can hide this from friends and family but you can’t divulge to the doctor.

Dementia: In the early stage of dementia person may appear absolutely fine, but, in fact, the person not able to look after him/herself very well. A person may have a poor diet, but appear happy in himself. Which has caused weight loss and it then turns out to be the early stages of dementia.

Side-effects from medication: Sometime medication reactions may cause side-effects resulting in weight loss. For example, pills can cause a loss of appetite or dry mouth. Some cause heartburn or give a mild stomach discomfort. So, any of these side effects could affect eating habits and outcome in loss of weight.

Diagnosis of weight loss

If you have loss of weight and do not know why they must see a doctor. Because, as a general rule, the earlier a serious problem is diagnosed, the better chance that treatment may improve the prognosis. A doctor may ask you various questions, He/she may actually uncover the symptoms that you were either unaware of or did not think were important. A doctor may also examine you. Tests, such as blood, urine may or may not be appropriate. Following a doctor’s advice, the likely cause may be clear and your doctor will advise on what to do next and what not do.
