Is Perception Deception on The Rise?


What’s your Perception and What is Perception Deception?

Perception Deception: Is our perception deceiving us? If our reality real? Or is it simply perception. And if our perception is faulty, then what can we do? Are we, therefore, limiting our abilities? Ultimately limiting our happiness? In “reality” this may seem true. But it is farther from the truth. Science says because the reality is simply perception. In essence, if we don’t like our reality. We can change our Perception Deception!


What does perception deception mean?

External information is absorbed through our senses. Then our brains must process this information. Process our thoughts based entirely on our perception of the world. How we feel, see, hear, taste, and smell it. The senses are known in N.L.P. as our Representational System.

In other words, our reality is simply a perceptual experience of our senses. Here is Google’s definition.

  1. The ability to see hears, or become aware of something through the senses.

Is there a limit to Human Perception Deception?

Let’s define it further. Perception starts externally. What we take in through our senses. But quickly becomes an inner game. Our brain needs to make sense of it. Process our senses and combine them with emotion. The gathering of this information is then stored in our minds.


The problem with this process is. Many Perception Deception are adopted early in life. How many 3 years old’s had a good grasp of the world. What you felt at three. May perception be different from today? If subconscious mental processes engage, it could be. Because when a belief has been created, with the emotional maturity of a three-year-old, it may be wrong. So, can perception deception be wrong? Yes!

Luckily, perception is fluid. It’s just today’s reality. It is simply a way of understanding this moment in time.  It becomes a way of interpreting something; of having a mental impression of something.  An opinion that is personal and malleable.

Why is malleability important?

Because we can choose to change our reality. Often it must change! Maybe it needs to change. Hopefully, we grow. Through growth, we learn and change.

When we don’t? Maybe we don’t thrive? We could develop tunnel vision. Life could feel stagnant. Or imagining a new path remains elusive. Possibly we recall times when we were just hanging on. This is when a shift offers hope and opportunity. Looking in another direction often breathes in a new beginning.

Growth and change are natural to evolution. Some say mandatory for happiness.

So when life seems bleak, why not shift?


Reality is, Human’s don’t like change. Therefore, we must reach a point where it’s more uncomfortable to remain the way things are. When moving on feels better.

But it doesn’t have to be tough.  Perception can shift instantly. Remember an ah-hah moment? Ever had an epiphany? Of course! But first, we must desire change. Be open to change. It’s an inner game, a process of the mind, where expert support helps. Change happens faster.

Why? Because when we take into account that everyone’s perception is different. Someone outside of us can see an altered perception  deception more clearly. Still not convinced? Experts have tools. Tools are good. Experts can teach tools. Give you tools.

The process begins with information gathering. Find the source of stagnation. Uncovering the perception attached to a belief system. What is the belief? Consider culture. Ingrained religious views or politics, moral values, gender or race equality, self-esteem and self-worth can all be considered beliefs. Is the world flat? Is it scary?

Shifting beliefs requires deeper understanding. It may require Clarification of memories. Then some filters through mental programming. Prior to making a shift, inner work must be accumulated and dissected. Exploring and uncovering the Meta Model so it can be used to your advantage.

What is a Meta Model? I call it the Big 8, the structure of decisions and strategy.


Every single decision we make is based on our Meta Model. Perception plays a big role. A professional may use a Meta-model, to by-pass conscious objections. Speak directly to and engaging the subconscious mind to create change.

Change is created.

Many have heard, “Nothing is written in stone”. However, it may be scribed in the mind. We, therefore, need to learn to edit perception.

Ever had a first impression that was wrong? So we know impressions influence choices. Good or bad. What we believe to be true. So what if our perception is bad.

For example, when we believe that we “lack choice”. That stuck feeling could be a clue. If we believe we lack choice? Then we do. We are our beliefs inhibit our mind from finding another option. And so, it becomes true. We lack choice.

A limitation is a clue!  It could be considered an opportunity to question. Pick one’s brain. Why do we think a certain way? Analyze the Meta Model. Then be curious. Ask yourself, “Am I moving towards or away from limitation”?


Below is the chart for Meta-Models. An easy way to discover your Metamodel is to complete the below exercise.

Numbers One and two are most utilized of the Big 8.

  1. Towards/ Away: Are you moving towards something good or away from something bad
  2. Internal/ External: What makes you believe you did a good job?
  3. Contemplative/ Action-oriented: Want to think or act?
  4. In-time/ Through-time: Do you focus on the moment or see the past to future?
  5. Independent/ Team Player: Like to work alone or as part of a team?
  6. One time/ Several Time: Need to research or make a judgement call and leap?
  7. General/ Specific: Liking detail or wanting the overall view?
  8. Matching/ Mis-Matching: Your way of analyzing, does it look the same or do you see the differences?

Meta-Models do not work independently! They are team players! Meta-Models interlock with representational systems.

What are Representational System and their predicates?

Decisions are a reflection of our Meta Model. View and communication refer to our Representational systems. (Discussed below). Everyone feels, hears, tastes smells and sees things differently. That is why siblings, friends, partners and marriages experience times of challenged communication.

The same life circumstance, yet perceived differently.

Note: Verbs, adverbs and adjectives. (Predicates)


The stronger three representational models are Visual, Auditory and Kinesthetic.

Most people use a combination of at least 3.

Visual: People utilize a lot of “visual type” words when they speak. They “see” things in learning. A visual person writes down the lecture. They can then see it. (Auditory people may not. They record it!)

  • Visual people: I see that”. Rather than “I get that”. (Kinesthetic: the action of going and getting something)
  • It was like a “light bulb going off in my head”. A “flash of recognition”. I can “see the horizon”.

Auditory People may be talkative, may be outspoken. Enjoy hearing their voice. Sing in the shower. Professionals that use their voice are most likely auditory.  Their language is also auditory in nature.

  • An auditory person would say: “I hear ya”. “It was screaming to me”. “I’ll go whimper off”. “I was tongue-tied”. “That resonated with me”.
  • Auditory people perceive their world through what they hear.

Kinesthetic people “feel”. Someone’s emotions “touched” them. They got a “handle” on their work. “Feel” “under” “Pressure”. Or you may hear them say; “When it “boils” right “down” to it.”

We see, hear and feel our world. That forms our perception.

Why else about perception is important?

In a deeper view of perception, science states that “we are” “what we think”. What does this mean?


Harvard, Yale and the New England Journal of Medicine agree that Psychology is holistic. Our thoughts initiate biological processes. This is when perception deception becomes very important. Biological processes determine how healthy we are.

For example, if someone’s language is often a reaction of anger. “Negative” hormones and chemicals are released from their brain as a result of those angry feelings, thoughts or words. Excessive negative hormones flush through this person’s body. The end result is mental emotional and physical tension, anxiety, stress, sleeplessness and more.

But there is more. Our brain creates a memory of this reaction. Once we have experienced and reacted once, it is more likely to repeat it.

And there is even worse news. It also impairs our immune function.

Every time we engage negative emotions. Our immune function is impaired for 6-8 hours! Anger or any negative emotion is dangerous to our health.Here is an example. The more we engage an emotion or reaction like anger. The stronger an “impulse” for anger becomes. A classic addiction patterns.

But now we realize. we can unlearn these addiction patterns. Change our perception deception. Take control of our thoughts and health!


With the awareness, that perception deception is only an estimation of any experience. We can learn to lessen its’ deception. Help ourselves be healthier. Happier at the same time. Science agrees.

We have more control than we first believed.

Why is this so? We have tools!

Physiological controls. We can use strategies (Meta-Model) and improve dialogue, to improve understanding, with Representational systems. With tools like N.L.P., we can access more of this powerful brain. Bi-pass and influence the limitations of our conscious brain.

Many industries manipulate our sub-conscious brains for their benefit. Salespeople, if they are good at their jobs, utilize subliminal communication skills. Buyer-be-ware!

The movie industry tricks our sub-conscious mind. That’s why we feel frightened or experience anxiety while watching a drama or horror film.


All from the safety of the couch! Have you ever experienced sweaty palms, anxiety, or a scream when startled? Therefore science recognizes that our brains do not differentiate reality and fantasy. Both reality and fantasy initiate a biological reaction.

How else is it available? Experience it or learn it!

Experience: Experience expanded power.  Influence and expand perception, reaction and actions. Improve analytical abilities. N.L.P. allows us to bi-passes willpower. Fast track our abilities.

Why is that good? If we could be better, create a perfect perception that reflects the life we want for ourselves, we would be happier. But what if we don’t know what we don’t know? In this situation, our Perception Deception is limited and we might not even know we are being deceived. We could make the wrong decision.
