How to Keep the Brain Healthy ? Healthy Brain Tips & Solutions

The human brain is the result of thousands of years of evolution. It is the most complex object known to man. A single human brain is capable of storing a far greater amount of information than any supercomputer ever created. It consumes 2% of the total body mass and consists of billions of neurons. It is believed that a single human brain has more neurons than there are stars in the universe. Even with years of study and research the brain still remains a mystery. Scientists still don’t have a clear answer to how the brain works.

How to keep the Brain Healthy?

Be that as it may, there are some ways to keep the brain healthy and fully functional. Here are some suggestions to keep the brain healthy.

  1. Reading: Research suggests that reading tricky and complex texts is good for the brain. According to one such research conducted at Liverpool University, reading books written by Shakespeare, Wordsworth and other classical writers not only boosts the part of the brain that is related to language but also the part of the brain that deals with memory and emotion. In short, reading reduces mental deterioration and slows down brain diseases that result in memory loss.
  2. Exercise: Regular exercise improves our memory and thinking ability. It helps boost the hippocampus which is the area of the brain that is related to verbal memory and learning. Exercise stimulates the release of chemicals that contribute to the growth and survival of brain cells. It helps to reduce stress and anxiety for higher cognitive functions.
  3. Healthy diet: Eating a balanced diet has always had its benefits, both physical and mental. A healthy diet provides the brain with specific nutrients that affect the cognitive functions and emotions. Especially food that is rich in omega-3 is very beneficial for the brain. Omega 3 helps reduce depression, ADHD and also protects the brain from falling victim to Alzheimer’s and dementia.
  4. Brain stimulating games: Games that challenge our brains help to keep us mentally fit. People who regularly play brain games are less likely to develop dementia. Board games like chess and checkers, puzzles like Sudoku are some games that help exercise the brain. Some brain stimulating games also help improve memory, learning, and focus.
  5. Learning a new language: Bilingual people have better memories and higher cognitive capacity. People who different languages fluently tend to be more creative and flexible than those who only speak one language. Monolingual people are more likely to develop Alzheimer’s and dementia than bilinguals in later stages of life. Plus, a study conducted in Sweden suggested that learning a new language could increase the size of the brain.
  6. Learning an instrument: Playing an instrument stimulates different senses like vision, hearing, and touch. Moreover, it requires a lot of movement and learning. These factors induce everlasting changes in the brain. Learning instrument results in increased skills of the learner.
  7. Meditation: Meditation is a practice that brings visible changes in the brain. It helps reduce anxiety, depression, and stress. It also helps to improve memory, attention and can also help get rid of addictions.
  8. Having sex: Some consider the brain to be the most important sexual organ in the human body because it is the center of all our thoughts, desires and emotions. An active sex life leads to the creation of new neurons in the brain, this process is known as neurogenesis. Having sex also increases the cognitive functions of the brain and helps us think more clearly. Sex stimulates the release of chemicals like dopamine, oxytocin, and serotonin resulting in the feeling of relaxation, ultimately reducing stress.
