“How long does Flue Last?” is the most common question for everyone because it makes you feel so bad that no one wants to get a flue. And there is a clear margin between flue and cold so that many of us get confused about, that’s why I am going to revel in this article regarding all differences as well.
Flu (influenza) is a highly contagious condition and is caused by one of three influenza virus types like influenza A, B, and C. Influenza can range from mild cases to life-threatening. It can be life-threatening as well as sinusitis, bronchitis, ear infection, pneumonia etc. For most healthy people, flu is just a common disease that resolves itself as the immune systems fights if off. Those who have weaker immune systems, it would take much time to fight off the illness and infection like elder people and children. So the longevity of flu depends on your personal immune system i.e. a fighting mechanism to the infection. The typical course for influenza is as follows:
- Day one: A high fever is seen with shivering, headaches, and muscle aches.
- Day two to three: Intense fatigue and nausea. This is when most people stay in bed all day since they lack the energy to move much.
- Day three to five: Nasal congestion will develop. A headache and facial pain
- Days five to fourteen: Although symptoms begin to disappear fatigue will linger for up to another week.
Contagious period of the flu begins a day or two before symptoms present themselves and can last for five to seven days but it may vary as a concern with following people:
- The very young
- People 65 or older
- Pregnant women
- People with a body mass index (BMI) of 40 or higher.
- People with chronic illnesses such as asthma, HIV, heart disease or diabetes.
Main difference between Cold and Flu
Note: Cold and flu are both viral infections but they have a typical difference. With cold, you would have symptoms like a runny nose or a sore throat while with flu, you would have several symptoms that may come on suddenly and include body aches, vomiting, fever etc.
Common symptoms of both cold and flu
- A sore throat
Colds are usually less severe than flu since it usually lasts for few days while flu or a bacterial infection such as bronchitis would last for more than a few days.
How to recover from the flu:
- Use plenty of water, and take bed rest.
If any serious can occur, it can be cured by medications and may also solve using medical supervision. There are also some natural treatments for influenza to relieve the symptoms and shorten the duration of the flu.
Natural Homemade Remedies for the flu
It is always better to use natural homemade products before using any decongestants and anti-cough mixtures.
- Vitamin C is one of the effective natural remedies to reduce the severity of influenza and colds. It helps to boost up our immunity system. It is a well-documented antioxidant.

- Go for an annual flu vaccine. It would reduce your risk of being infected with flu, virus, influenza etc.
- Always wash your hands with soap and water before eating or touching anything.
- Always prefer to doctor if you get any flu symptoms.
- Quit smoking since it infects your respiratory tract and it is recorded that smokers are at higher risk of being infected by flu.
- Always try to live a healthy life.
