“How long does Flue Last?” is the most common question for everyone because it makes you feel so bad that no one wants to get a flue. And there is a clear margin between flue and cold so that many of us get confused about, that’s why I am going to revel in this article regarding all differences as well.


Flu (influenza)

Flu (influenza) is a highly contagious condition and is caused by one of three influenza virus types like influenza A, B, and C. Influenza can range from mild cases to life-threatening. It spreads quickly by way of droplets of saliva that become airborne when someone sneezes or coughs. You can also get flue by exposure to saliva passed by routine contact, kissing, sharing eating utensils, clothes etc.

Generally, flu appears in winter and early spring and following symptoms are seen:

Causes of Flu

Flu is most commonly caused by three types of influenza virus: A, B, and C. Seasonal outbreaks are caused by A and B type flu viruses and their symptoms are more serious than the influenza C virus. It is highly contagious and spreads through sneezing or coughing, so you can get flu from touching an infected person. Flu is usually seen within 1 to 4 days of the virus entering the body. Some may not have symptoms but transfer the flu virus.


How long does flu last?

Flu lasts for a week to vary. It can be life-threatening as well as sinusitis, bronchitis, ear infection, pneumonia etc. For most healthy people, flu is just a common disease that resolves itself as the immune systems fights if off. Those who have weaker immune systems, it would take much time to fight off the illness and infection like elder people and children. So the longevity of flu depends on your personal immune system i.e. a fighting mechanism to the infection. The typical course for influenza is as follows:

  • Day one: A high fever is seen with shivering, headaches, and muscle aches.
  • Day two to three: Intense fatigue and nausea. This is when most people stay in bed all day since they lack the energy to move much.
  • Day three to five: Nasal congestion will develop. A headache and facial pain
  • Days five to fourteen: Although symptoms begin to disappear fatigue will linger for up to another week.

Contagious period of the flu begins a day or two before symptoms present themselves and can last for five to seven days but it may vary as a concern with following people:

  • The very young
  • People 65 or older
  • Pregnant women
  • People with a body mass index (BMI) of 40 or higher.
  • People with chronic illnesses such as asthma, HIV, heart disease or diabetes.

Main difference between Cold and Flu

Note: Cold and flu are both viral infections but they have a typical difference. With cold, you would have symptoms like a runny nose or a sore throat while with flu, you would have several symptoms that may come on suddenly and include body aches, vomiting, fever etc.


Common symptoms of both cold and flu

  • A sore throat
  • Sneezing
  • Congestion
  • Coughing
  • Headaches

Colds are usually less severe than flu since it usually lasts for few days while flu or a bacterial infection such as bronchitis would last for more than a few days.


How to recover from the flu:

  • Use plenty of water, and take bed rest.

If any serious can occur, it can be cured by medications and may also solve using medical supervision. There are also some natural treatments for influenza to relieve the symptoms and shorten the duration of the flu.


Natural Homemade Remedies for the flu

It is always better to use natural homemade products before using any decongestants and anti-cough mixtures.

  • Vitamin C is one of the effective natural remedies to reduce the severity of influenza and colds. It helps to boost up our immunity system. It is a well-documented antioxidant.
  • Elderberry Extract is always best foodstuff to treat respiratory infections since it helps to recover you faster from influenza. It helps to treat influenza A and B viruses. They have to be received as 15 ml syrup 4 times a day for 5 days. It is recorded that flu symptom would be cleared up 4 days earlier than those who didn’t take it.
  • Keep hydrated / use plenty of water: Being hydrated keep you away from fever, vomiting or diarrhea very soon, so always use plenty of water. It helps to treat congestion and keep your sinuses moist.
  • Echinacea Tea helps to boost up your immune system by fighting against influenza and flu. It is also more beneficial on upper respiratory tract infections. To make Echinacea Tea you can do following way:
  1. Take one part of fresh Echinacea Leaves, Flowers or even root
  2. Take one part of grated ginger root take
  3. some amount of honey or lemon as per your taste flavor.

Then after boil a small pan of water and let the Echinacea and ginger infuse for 15 minutes in a teapot. It is also recommended to keep the lid on so that medicinal properties don’t escape. After 15 minutes pour some tea into a cup and add honey or lemon juice for your tasting flavor.


Treatment and Prevention

You can even take some pain relievers to lower your fever and relieve the aches such as:

  • Acetaminophen (Tylenol)
  • Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin)
  • Naproxen (Aleve)

You may also consult with a doctor for an antiviral drug. Furthermore, you can also follow these steps to prevent flu:

  • Go for an annual flu vaccine. It would reduce your risk of being infected with flu, virus, influenza etc.
  • Always wash your hands with soap and water before eating or touching anything.
  • Always prefer to doctor if you get any flu symptoms.
  • Quit smoking since it infects your respiratory tract and it is recorded that smokers are at higher risk of being infected by flu.
  • Always try to live a healthy life.
