Home Remedy for Dandruff | Dandruff Treatment Solution at Home


Dandruff is also known as seborrheic dermatitis, which is a common scalp disorder. It can happen due to dry scalp, fungus on the scalp, irritated oily skin and growth of bacteria on the scalp. Inflammatory skin conditions and other such factors can also cause dandruff. Dandruff can cause itchiness along with the excessive formation of dry skin flakes on the scalp. There are many drugstore remedies such as shampoos containing various chemicals such as zinc pyrithione that targets fungus and bacteria, selenium sulfide and coal tar: it slows the growth die-off skin cells on the scalp, ketoconazole: fights fungus, and salicylic acid: it loosens the flakes so that they can be washed away. Despite drugstore remedies, there are many home remedies for reducing dandruff and some of them are listed below:

  1. Neem and Olive Oil:- In this remedy, we need a few neem leaves and 4 tablespoons of olive oil. First of all, the Neem should be crushed to a powder, then mix the powder with olive oil in a bowl and make a paste. Apply the paste on the scalp and leave it on for about an hour, then wash it with shampoo properly.
  2. Coconut and honey scalp scrub:- For this remedy, we need 2 teaspoons of coconut oil, 2 teaspoons of olive oil, 2 teaspoons of honey and 3 teaspoons of yogurt. After getting all the ingredients, we have to mix it in a bowl and make a pate of medium consistency. The paste should not be runny and if in case it is runny then we can add a little more of yogurt or honey to thicken it. Apply the paste to the scalp and massage it gently. Continue the massage for about 10 minutes. After massaging, leave it for about 30-45 minutes and then rinse it out by using shampoo. Once it is done, dry the hair with a soft towel and apply a few drops of coconut oil on the hair and scalp. The coconut helps in preserving the hair’s natural proteins which help in eliminating dandruff.
  3. Baking soda and lemon:-  The baking soda work by reducing the overactive fungi which are responsible for dandruff. Take 2 tablespoons of fresh lemon juice, 3 tablespoons of baking soda and a bowl of apple cider vinegar. Mix all the ingredients in a bowl and apply the paste to the scalp. Leave it for 10 minutes and wash the hair with water. Apple cider vinegar can be used as a conditioner.
  4. Listerine Mouthwash:- The mouthwash tends the anti-fungal properties that fight with dandruff causing yeast and prevent its growth. For this remedy, all we need is 1 tablespoon of Listerine mouthwash and 9 tablespoons of water. So, first of all, mix the mouthwash with water in a bowl. Then, wash the hair with regular shampoo and rinse the hair with the mouthwash mixture. We can leave the mixture as it is.
  5. Yogurt:- Yogurt is one of the best sources of friendly bacteria which prevents scaling of the scalp. It is one of the ideal remedies for dandruff as it is a good source of probiotics. Take 1 cup of plain yogurt, shampoo the hair and rinse, apply the yogurt on the scalp and leave it on for 15 minutes. After 15 minutes, rinse the hair and wash again by using a small amount of shampoo. The yogurt must be fresh, otherwise, the desired result may be achieved.
  6. Fenugreek Seeds:- There are several vitamins and minerals in the fenugreek seeds which makes it one of the ideal home remedies for dandruff. In this remedy, we need 1 tablespoon of fenugreek seeds and 2 cups of hot water. What we need to do is, crush the fenugreek seeds with a pestle, then take two cups of hot water and soak the seeds in the water overnight. After that, strain the mixture and use the water to rinse the hair in the morning.
  7. Cedarwood oil:- It has anti-seborrheic properties which treat dandruff and other inflammatory scalp conditions. We need 10 drops of cypress essential oil, 50 ml carrier oil, 7 drops of cedarwood essential oil and 10 drops of juniper essential oil. To make the remedy, mix the ingredients in a bowl and rub the mixture into the scalp. Leave it on for about an hour and then wash it with a mild shampoo, then rinse with warm water. Mix the same quantities of ingredients in two cups of water and use them for a final rinse.
  8. Egg yolk:- Egg yolk is a great source of biotin, which is one of those vitamins that can help to treat dandruff. It helps to condition the hair and make it healthier, so egg yolk is a great remedy for dandruff. For this remedy, 1-2 egg yolks are required. Mix the yolk of the eggs in a bowl and apply the yolk on the scalp. Before applying the yolk, make sure that your hair is dry. Once the yolk is applied, cover the hair with a plastic bag and leave it on for about an hour. After an hour, wash the hair thoroughly with a shampoo.
  9. Olive oil:- Olive oil helps in moisturizing the dry areas of the scalp and prevents them from flaking. Even a little amount of olive oil will help in loosening the stubborn dandruff scales. The loosen dandruff scales will eventually fall off the scalp. Olive oil easily gets absorbed into the thick and scaly areas of the scalp which causes continuous dandruff issues. Because of this, the scaly areas fall away as one large piece as an alternative of separate flakes. For this remedy, all we need is a few drops of olive oil and apply it on the scalp. Massage the scalp slowly for about 10 minutes and wash the hair with shampoo. Make sure that the oil is just warm not too hot.
  10. Garlic:- We all know that the garlic has excellent anti-fungal properties which can eliminate the microbes that cause dandruff. In this remedy, we need a few garlic cloves and 1 tablespoon of honey. To make this remedy, at first we need to make a paste by crushing the garlic cloves and mix it with honey. Massage the paste into the scalp and leave it on for about 15 minutes, then wash the hair with shampoo.
  11. Vinegar:- Vinegar has the capacity of killing the scalp fungus and bacteria. It helps in the treatment of dry skin and in reducing dandruff not caused by a fungus. Vinegar contains the acid, which reduces the itchiness of the scalp and drastically brings down flaking. Take 2 cups of vinegar and 1 cup of water. We need to boil 2 cups of vinegar and let it cool. Then mix the one-eighth of vinegar with a cup of water. Massage the scalp with the mixture and then wash the hair with shampoo.
  12. Aloe Vera:- It has natural antibacterial and fungicidal properties. It also contains proteolytic enzyme characteristics, which means that it can break down proteins including dead skin cells. This quality of the aloe vera makes it act as an exfoliant and it removes the dead skin so that it doesn’t appear later as dandruff. For this remedy, we need a small amount of aloe vera gel which is directly obtained from the plant. Apply the gel on the scalp and leave it on for 15 minutes, then rinse it using a mild shampoo.
  13. Ginger:- It has anti-inflammatory properties and also helps in stimulating the hair growth. The active components which can be found in ginger help to prevent dandruff. Take a small amount of ginger and 4 ounces of sesame oil, then peel the ginger and grate it. After that, squeeze them in a cheesecloth to get the oil. After the ginger oil is produced, mix it with sesame oil and gently massage the scalp with the mixture. Leave it on for some time and then wash it properly with shampoo.
  14. Henna:- Henna has the ability to bind the keratin in the hair that creates a protective layer and relieves scalp irritation. It also helps in reducing the oiliness of the scalp and acts as a conditioner. This possession of henna helps in reducing dandruff. For this remedy, we need 1 teaspoon of henna, 1 teaspoon of amla powder, 1 teaspoon of tea powder, 1 teaspoon of lemon juice and 1 teaspoon hair oil. We have to mix all the ingredients in a cup in order to get a paste. Apply the paste properly to the scalp and leave it on for a few minutes, then wash the hair with mild shampoo.
  15. Castor oil:- Castor oil is very rich in ricinoleic acid and ricin. The oil possesses the antimicrobial properties which treat scalp infections like seborrheic dermatitis and dandruff. The castor oil is also a humectant. It keeps both the scalp and the hair moisturized. With this remedy, we can get rid of dandruff as well as can get silky and shiny hair. For this remedy, we need 3-4 tablespoons of castor oil and warm it up a little bit. Apply the oil to the scalp and hair then massage it for a few minute so that the oil gets absorbed properly. Leave it on for overnight and wash the hair with shampoo in the morning.
