Shilajit, a brownish-black resin is a natural substance discharged from layers of rock found mainly in high Himalayan Mountains in Nepal and India. However, shilajit has also been found in Tibet, Afghanistan, Chile, and Russia. It is formed over centuries by gradual decomposition and breaking down of certain plants and minerals. There are tons of benefits of shilajit and is safe to add in your daily diet as a dietary supplement.

Shilajit is also known as mineral pitch, which has been known to be used for centuries by Ayurvedic medicine. In Ayurveda, Shilajit is famous for a rejuvenator and aphrodisiac property and antiaging compound. The primary compound in shilajit is fulvic and humic acid, which provides anti-inflammatory, anti-anxiety, and anti-stress properties. The health benefits of shilajit differ depending on the place from which shilajit is extracted.

Shilajit is commonly consumed and famous in Eastern Culture and is a crucial component of ayurvedic medicine as Rasayana. Traditionally, shilajit is consumed by people living in Nepal and India. People drink it with milk as a supplement in the morning in their breakfast or with lukewarm water. On the other hand, Sherpas from Nepal claims to have shilajit in their daily diet that makes them strong and healthy. Shilajit has been useful for several diseases like a kidney stone, cancer, chronic constipation, prostate enlargement, managing diabetes, breathing trouble, and many more.

What form of Shilajit to Choose?

Shilajit is commercially available in processed form. However, they are also sold in their raw form. When I have to classify shilajit, I would divide them into three, raw shilajit, fake shilajit, and processed shilajit. You can get shilajit as hard as rock or in powder form or slimy texture.


Before you buy shilajit, do your research to make sure you buy the real one. However, having said that you need to find a real one, don’t go with the natural and raw form of shilajit. Buying raw shilajit might sound like the best way to buy; it’s something you need to avoid.

Raw shilajit contains a high amount of minerals, irons, and harmful impurities, which can cause you iron poisoning and other health problems.


Some companies may add additives to shilajit, which can cause you allergic reaction or adverse health consequences.

So, do your homework, research and buy the product that is good for you.

How much Shilajit to use?

Shilajit is available in the market in the form of capsule, powder, also in a supplement that can be dissolved in warm water or milk. It is recommended portion to eat shilajit is three hundred to five hundred milligrams per day. A person can have shilajit in small portions since some people can have side effects or allergic reaction with shilajit. So, dissolve a pea-sized portion of shilajit or 100 mg at a time dissolving into warm water or milk. As shilajit contains a high amount of iron, eating shilajit more than recommended value can cause Iron overdose. When you consume shilajit correctly, shilajit may have several health benefits which may be due to fulvic and humic acids and other minerals.

So far, research on the effects of shilajit is limited on humans. However, research has been done on rats, but any health benefits that domes up in rat study often do not replicate in human studies. Here are some of the health benefits of shilajit that are findings from the available research.

In a research published by Blackwell Verlag GmbH, among healthy male volunteers between the age of 45 to 55 half of the participants were given 250 milligrams (mg) of shilajit twice a day and other half were given placebo. After 90 days, they revealed that the group who added 250 mg in their diet had their testosterone increased as compared to the placebo group.[1]

Traditionally, traditional healers used shilajit for treatment of male infertility. Likewise, in a survey with infertile adults, 50-milligram shilajit was added to their diet for 90 days. At the end of 90 day period, the result showed increased weights of reproductive organs, testicular daily sperm production and serum level of testosterone, increased total sperm count and sperm mortality[3] [4].

Likewise, shilajit strengthens the blood vessels, which further reduces the increased pressure in the lower rectum, reducing the swelling of veins and get rid of symptoms of piles.

Adding shilajit as a dietary supplement may also improve heart health. In a recent study on rats, it was found that shilajit has positive effects on rats’ heart.


Lab rats were divided into two groups. Before rats were injected with isoproterenol to induce heart injury, one-half group of lab rats received pretreatment of shilajit. The research concluded that those rats that had shilajit medication had less damage to the heart than those who weren’t given shilajit[5].

Caution: In some case, shilajit may reduce blood pressure. So, people with an active heart condition should avoid adding shilajit to their diet.

Doses of Shilajit

Doses of shilajit vary according to patients’ age, body weight, and disease. However, a general rule of thumb, children can consume at most 200 milligrams of shilajit. Likewise, the adult can consume up to one gram of shilajit in a day dividing it into several portions.

The best time to take shilajit is on an empty stomach in the morning and the night before bed. You can take shilajit by dissolving it into warm water. However, it is best to drink shilajit with milk. Dissolve shilajit in the hot milk and drink it warm.

Side-effects of Shilajit

Shilajit is a natural herb and is safe to consume. However, you shouldn’t consume raw or unprocessed shilajit. As shilajit forms due to compression of plant matters and minerals, raw shilajit contains heavy metals ions, fungus, radicals, that can make you sick. So, it is necessary to consume the purified form of shilajit.

If you have an allergic reaction with plants, or sickle cell anemia, or hemochromatosis (having too much iron in the blood), stop taking shilajit you might be allergic to shilajit supplement.


If you are taking shilajit for the first time, break 500 mg of shilajit it into small porting, rice grain size and drink it with warm milk if you notice any change like developing of rash, increased heart rate or dizziness stop taking it.


There are several health benefits of shilajit and is safe and effective supplement when used correctly. However, some people might encounter side effects. Therefore, it’s better to consult with your doctor before adding shilajit in your daily diet.
