Vitiligo is a type of skin disease that causes the loss of skin color in blotches. But due to certain genetic malfunctions, your immune system mistakenly attacks some part of your own body.

For instance, in vitiligo, our immune system destroys the melanocytes of the skin causing the white patches on the skin. Hence, lack of melanin pigment on the skin results in the formation of white blotches on the skin.

Home Remedies To Treat Vitiligo

Many people who experience vitiligo wonder what they can do about it, and whether their dietary and lifestyle choices can prevent a recurrence or worsen of the condition. Well, they actually do. That’s why you need these home remedies!

1.Red Clay

This might come as a shock to you guys but red clay is an effective natural treatment for vitiligo. Red clay is rich in copper. Doctors have suggested that lack of trace elements such as zinc and copper halts the process of keratinization and melanin formation. The enzymatic reaction requires these trace elements. Hence, using red clay paste on the affected areas is effective to treat vitiligo.

How to Use?

For this, you need two tablespoons of clay and a tablespoon of ginger juice. Mix the content on a non-metallic bowl with a non-metal spoon. Apply the mixture on affected areas and let it sit for 10 minutes. Use this method twice or thrice a day to see the results. Copper boosts the process of melanin formation while ginger stimulates the blood flow on the affected areas.

2.UV protection

Extreme sun can also trigger vitiligo and help it spread to other parts of the body. Therefore, if you have vitiligo, try protecting your skin from the sun using a broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen cream with SPF 30 or greater. Reapply the sunscreen every two hours if you’re sitting on the sun. In addition, you can wear hats or full sleeves and long pants to shield your skin from the damaging sun. Sunscreen also minimizes tanning, which makes the contrast between the normal and discolored skin.

3.Basil leaves

Basil leaves are natural anti-oxidants having anti-aging and anti-bacterial properties. The basil essential oil promotes melanin formation, slowing down the process of whitening of the skin. You can get basil oil and apply it on the affected areas or you can mix basil leaves with lime juice and apply it every day on the white patches for better results.

4.Turmeric and mustard oil

Another effective home remedy for vitiligo is turmeric and mustard oil paste. Turmeric along with mustard oil is best to restore the pigmentation o the skin. Mix a table spoon of turmeric with two tablespoons of mustard oil and apply it for 20 minutes on the affected area. Turmeric consists of two major components, curcuminoids, and volatile oil. These active components prevent the cell death and production of melanin, ultimately reducing the oxidative stress of the body.

5.Diet and Fruits

Before I tell you about diet and fruits that you should have if you have vitiligo, let me first make sure that there’s no officially prescribed vitiligo diet. The best diet option includes incorporating tons of fruits containing antioxidants, beta-carotenes and other vitamins that boosts your immune system.

Some of the foods that people with vitiligo should eat include apples, bananas, leafy greens, chickpeas,  papayas, beetroots, carrots, radishes, dry fruits like dates and figs. Also, eating some foods can trigger the vitiligo. Therefore, it’s better that you avoid food like alcohol, coffee, curds, fish, fruit juice, pickles, grapes, pomegranate, red meats, tomatoes, wheat products and so on.

6. Ginkgo Biloba Paste

Last but not the least, we have gingko biloba paste. This is an ancient Chinese Ayurveda technique that’s been used for centuries to cure vitiligo along with other health issues. Gingko Biloba is a magical herb that ayurvedic experts claim to slow the progression of pigment loss of the skin.

You can get Ginkgo Biloba powder from any herbal shop and all you need to do is mix with water and make a paste. Apply it to the affected areas, let it sit for at least half an hour and rinse it with warm water. Use this method every day for few weeks and see that the skin starts to re-pigment, giving your skin back its natural color.
